First, the service was speedy and packaged perfectly (multiple glass bottles and jars made it in one piece).
It all started when I was telling a friend about the hot sauce we used to get back in the 70s. I even got to visit the original Jerome's garage where they bar-b-qued on bed springs (the old type military bunks, not today's plush foam filled ones). My friend, a computer freak, started searching and found the whole history of the Batman sauce. In my later years I heard that Blaine Hill bar was making the Batman sauce, so I visited. I was impressed that the sauce had remained almost identical to the Jerome version.
My friend also let me know that Stello Foods was making and packaging Batman sauce, so I ordered the Extra Hot, Hot and Mild versions. Of course, I tried the Extra Hot first. The taste was fantastic, but I was a little underwhelmed
with the "heat". The original Batman was probably about 150-200,000 Scoville units, while the Stella version is probably 50-75,000 (by my tastebuds). After a night of adult beverages your throat was way less sensitive to the "heat" of the original Batman sauce, so after a few months we started ordering ice cream to finish off the night. It didn't quench the burn in the throat, but the next day on the "throne" we'd start screaming "come on ice cream", LOL.
With all the sensitivities these day and the quickness to sue, I can understand the current Batman sauce Extra Hot intensity. And the market for "tongue punishing heat" sauces would be very limited. In fact, I'm not too sure my body at 77 years would be able to handle the blowtorch heat of the original version, so I'll be happy using the Batman sauce Extra Hot for its flavor and memories of a younger me. If nothing else, my friend found out that my stories were from true experience and not made-up fantasies of a senile old codger.
PS, I love Chicken Marsala, but hate the time it takes me to prepare it. I ordered the Stello Foods Marsala Sauce. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment at this time. Having those bottles and jars arrive in one piece was the first pleasure with Stello Foods.
Thank you Stello Foods.
